"New Heaven, New Earth" 2021 Album
The second album by the Lancaster, PA- based quartet finds singer-songwriter Chris Kauffman ruminating on his conservative religious upbringing and the effects of that world-view on our culture today, as well as his own personal life.
The album explores the negatives: such as religious sexism (“As Christ”) and harmful ideas and practices (“Come Quickly, Jesus” , “I Kissed Joshua Goodbye”) as well as some of the positives that Chris experienced during his years in Mennonite and fundamentalist Evangelical circles. For example the ideas of grace (“Grace”), hope (“Enough For Us All”, New Heaven, New Earth”), and taking care of ”the least of these” (“Little Birds”, “Enough…”) are ideas that have stuck with him, even though his journey has led him away from these conservative churches.
Chris is joined by his fellow bandmates Joe Stauffer (vocals, electric guitars), Joel Meck (bass), and Dan Carpenter (drums) as well as a number of independent musicians that the band has looked up to over the years.
Canyon Sharits, Jessica Smucker, Sean Cox (Three Strands), Kirk Kreider (of Silver City Rodeo) and Dan Menz-Erb and Jansen Herr (both of the now defunct indie band Jawbone Hill) have also all lent their all-star talents to this album, making it one of the most ambitious ones that the band has taken on yet. The logistics of putting out a collaborative album during a pandemic caused the release of the music to be delayed for over a year. However, “New Heaven, New Earth” is finally able to be scheduled for release as a CD and on all digital platforms on November 12.
